How an AI answer gets built
When someone asks an assistant a question, most engines do three things: retrieve a set of candidate sources (from a live search index, a partner index, or trained knowledge), synthesise those sources into one written answer, and cite a handful of them as references. The signals that get sources picked
- Authority and reputation — domains with a track record on a topic get retrieved and cited disproportionately. Models inherit the web's trust graph.

- Clarity and structure — a page that answers the question directly, near the top, under clean headings, is easy to quote. Buried answers get skipped even when they're correct.
- Third-party corroboration — a claim that appears on several independent sites is safer for a model to repeat than one that only appears on yours.
Why the same sites keep getting cited
Comparison posts, review platforms, category roundups ("best X for Y"), and documentation-style pages dominate citations because they match how questions are asked and hand the model a ready-made answer. And once a domain proves reliable for a topic, engines keep going back to it — citation is a rich-get-richer game.
