AI Overview & AI Mode
Google now answers many searches directly with AI. Upranke tracks whether your brand appears in those answers — in AI Overviews at the top of results, and in AI Mode, Google’s fully conversational search.

What are AI Overview and AI Mode?
AI Overview is the AI-generated summary Google shows at the top of the results page for many searches. It pulls from multiple sources to answer the query directly — and it often names specific brands, products, and services.
AI Mode is Google's fully conversational search experience. Instead of a page of links, the user gets a complete AI-written answer with citations — much closer to ChatGPT than to a classic results page.
Both surfaces decide, query by query, which brands to mention and which sites to cite. Upranke scans them with your tracked keywords and records exactly who shows up.
A measured 0% is not the same as "Not tracked yet". 0% means Upranke scanned the surface for your keywords and your brand did not appear — a real, useful data point you can act on. "Not tracked yet" means no scan has run for that surface, so there is no data either way. Run a refresh to get your first measurement.
Where to find it
Open any brand and go to Visibility → Google AI Surfaces. You'll see one row for AI Overview and one for AI Mode, each showing its current mention rate and when it was last scanned.
Running a scan
In Visibility → Google AI Surfaces, find the refresh button next to the surface you want to update.
Upranke queries Google's AI surfaces with your tracked keywords. This runs in the background and usually takes a few minutes.
Once the scan completes, the mention rate, mention count, and the Competitor & Source Map all update with fresh data.
Plan around the cooldown. Each AI surface can be refreshed once every 15 days. The button tells you exactly when the next refresh unlocks — time your scans to land after content pushes or PR wins so you can see their effect. See Scan Limits & Cooldowns.
Reading the numbers
- Mention rate — the share of scanned keywords where your brand appeared in the AI answer. A 20% rate means you were mentioned on 1 in 5 of your tracked keywords.
- Mentions — the raw count of keywords where your brand appeared.
- Competitor & Source Map — who shows up when you don't: the competitors dominating the answers and the domains Google cites. Covered in detail in Competitor & Source Map.
Broad keywords dilute your numbers. A term like generative ai makes Google answer with general knowledge — no single brand is likely to be mentioned, so it drags your mention rate down without telling you anything. Track keywords with genuine brand or buying intent instead.
