GEO vs SEO

SEO earns rankings on results pages; GEO earns mentions inside AI answers. Here is how the two disciplines overlap and where they part ways.

The core difference: SEO optimises pages for a ranking algorithm that orders links. GEO optimises your brand for a language model that reads its sources and writes the answer itself. One decides where you appear on a page; the other decides whether you exist in the answer at all.

What each one optimises for

SEO targets a ranking system. Google crawls, indexes, and orders pages; your job is to make one page the best candidate for one query. Success is a position — and the click that follows it.

GEO targets an answer-synthesising model. The assistant retrieves a set of sources, weighs how much it trusts each, and composes a single response that names a few brands. Success is being mentioned or cited inside that response — often with no click involved at all.

Where they overlap

Good GEO builds on good SEO. The same foundations feed both:

  • Crawlable, accessible content — if bots can't read your site, neither ranking systems nor AI retrieval will surface it.
  • Genuinely useful content — depth and accuracy win in both worlds; thin pages lose in both.
  • Authority — backlinks tell Google a page matters; the same links, mentions, and reviews teach language models that your brand is credible.
  • Structure — clear headings, direct answers, and structured data help crawlers rank you and help models quote you accurately.

What changes in practice

  • You measure mentions, not positions — mention rate, share of voice, and sentiment inside AI answers replace rank tracking.
  • You optimise the brand, not just the page — models draw on everything written about you, so entity clarity and consistency across the web matter as much as any single URL.
  • Third-party coverage does heavy lifting — reviews, comparisons, and press are often what gets you into an answer, because models weight independent corroboration over self-description.
  • You write for extraction — pages that state answers plainly (what you do, for whom, versus what) are the ones a model can lift into a response.

Do you still need SEO?

Yes. Classic search traffic hasn't disappeared, and the assets SEO builds — authority, content, technical health — are the raw material GEO works with. Treat GEO as the layer on top: same foundations, new scoreboard. The mistake is measuring only the old scoreboard; Visibility Tracking shows you the AI side, engine by engine.
